The area known as the Winter Garden is exceptionally wet in the winter, often bone-dry in summer. Recent plantings have been ravaged by rabbits, muntjaks and pheasants. After a full year’s trial period three plants have proved to be predator proof; Roastbeef Iris, Symphytum ibericum and Sarcococca. The coppiced Willow (Salix alba subsp. Vitellina Britzensis) has been nibbled by muntjaks. Its stems have since been protected. When fully established it will, with its beautiful winter hue, become a highlight of this garden.
